CHAPTER ELEVEN

Jack had no doubt Laine would stay where he’d put her, so she wasn’t a concern as he slowly opened the door and entered the suite. Inside the lavish room, the curtains had been pulled, a fire crackled merrily in the fireplace, and the lights had been dimmed, giving the luxurious surroundings an even richer and more romantic feel. Thick, cream-colored carpet deadened the sound of his footfalls, and his eyes quickly took in the details of the suite. Directly in front of him was the sitting area, with a large couch and two wing-backed chairs flanking the hearth. A desk with rolling chair sat near the window. Everything seemed to be in perfect order.

To his right was the kitchen, and an open set of double doors past the kitchen revealed a full-sized dining table and eight chairs. Seeing and hearing nothing out of the ordinary, he moved away from the door and let it close silently behind him.

He looked into the dining room and found it empty. After checking behind the curtains in both rooms, he crossed the sitting area to the closed double doors that led into the bedroom. He listened at the door for a moment, then wrapped his fingers around the knob and turned it as slowly and as quietly as possible. He tensed as he pushed the panel inward. When no one shot at him or sprang out from hiding, he stuck his head in and looked around. The room appeared empty.

A king-sized, four-poster, canopied bed dominated the space. Lengths of sheer white fabric hung from the dark wood beams to the floor, and on either side of the frame was a set of shallow steps. He moved to the end of the bed and looked beneath the enormous piece of furniture.

Behind him sat an armoire and a matching dresser, both empty. To his left was another door which he figured led back out to the hallway, and to his right was the bathroom. Jack walked over, listened at the door, and stuck his head in.

As if the rest of the suite hadn’t been opulent enough, the bathroom was the piece de resistance. The floors and tile were a muted gold, and he could see his reflection in almost every surface. The bathtub was the crown jewel, more like a pool than a tub, centered in front of a spotless window which took up most of the wall overlooking the street. Candles lined the marble surround, their flickering light glittering off the pristine glass. He could easily imagine Laine in a place like this, drinking $100 tumblers of 30 year-old scotch, and soaking in the Jacuzzi tub up to her neck in bubbles. It was a nice picture.

The thought of her gave him a pang of guilt and he scowled. He knew why she was angry with him, and she had every right to be. Hell, he was angry with himself. He seemed to lose his mind whenever she was near.
